Vilya v. Nenya

Postby Picinauco » Thursday, 19.12.2002., 20:15

If I am not mistaken, Elrond used Vilya to flood Bruinen. Why then, is Galadriel's Nenya, set with a white adamant stone, the ring of water while Elrond's Vilya set with a blue sapphire the ring of air? It seems counter-intuitive. Any ideas?

I personally dont think the ring's individual properties provided the bearer with specific powers regarding the Elven rings. I beleive the rings were used for protective purposes, for keeping the areas within a certain radius free from evil and keeping the land immortal within that radius. So the fact that Elrond could flood bruinen was due to the fact that the Nazgul tried to pass an area within the boundaries of Vilya, therefore allowing Elrond (and Gandalf) to temporarily cause a flood. The same way that Galadriel may have been able to flood the silverlode, if the situation required it.

Also dont forget that the ring of air (Vilya) is more likely to cause a flood than the ring of water i.e wind causes waves etc. Nenya (ring of water) could have helped create the mirror of Galadriel (water with evidentally magical qualities).

All speculation :D

Is there any specific reference that proves Elrond used his ring to create the flood? When Gandalf explains it, he merely says that "it is Elrond's river" (although he would obviously be unlikely to mention the ring was involved).

Well, as i said it's all speculation. Elrond deffinately caused the flood (with or without the ring) and Gandalf provided the white horses on the wave crest. The evidence to support ring use is that the rings were protective rather than aggressive enabling Elrond to cause the flood when under attack in his land....but who knows :)

Elrond might have used his ring to cause the flood but on the otherhand what says against a technical solution. If Elrond had a dam upstreams he could just open it and cause a flood.

An elf fiddling with nature to benefit themselves by building a dam? Not on your nelly.

Elves built around and incorporated nature into everything they made.

And jellyfish...hi but before making random silly comments you should consider what you mean by 'magical' and understand what and where a Wizard and Elrond came from. The Druedain possesed obvious 'magical' qualities, but could they flood a river?

Then do it in a way fit for a so-called "newbie" rather than a condescending "Hey people" as the opening
